Why the Cowboys can cover
Quarterback Trey Lance impressed enough in camp to earn a spot on the 53-man roster and is expected to have a big impact against the Chargers. In two preseason games, Lance completed 40 of 64 passes (62.5%) for 339 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for 80 yards. In last Saturday's 27-12 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, he completed 15 of 23 passes for 151 yards and one score, including a 1-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Flournoy with 1 minute, 11 seconds left in the first half. Lance also completed seven passes for 34 yards and one score.
Flournoy is one of the players competing for a roster spot and could be used as the sixth wide receiver. He has six receptions for 31 yards in two games. He was a sixth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Southeast Missouri State University. Last year at Southeast Missouri State, he had 57 receptions for 839 yards (14.7 average) and six touchdowns, including a long one of 89 yards. Find out who to root for with SportsLine.
Why the Chargers can cover
Los Angeles will continue to try to sort out its backup quarterback situation with Easton Stick and Luis Perez expected to both play. Stick, who is expected to start against Dallas, has had mixed results in the Chargers' first two games. In the loss to Seattle, Stick completed 5 of 13 passes for 31 yards and one interception. He improved slightly in the loss to the Rams, completing 8 of 13 passes for 85 yards and one interception.
Perez led the United Football League in passing this spring but has yet to get his chance. In a loss to the Seahawks, Perez completed 5 of 12 attempts for 61 yards, then completed 13 of 20 attempts for 78 yards against the Rams. In 10 games with Arlington in the UFL, Perez has completed 225 of 336 attempts (67%) for 2,310 yards and 18 touchdowns with four interceptions. Find out who to root for with SportsLine.
