The STEAM camp (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) took place Aug. 19-23 at the Bold Center.
LAC LA BICHE – What's more fun than making ice cream or play dough, building a marble course, decorating balloons or constructing a structure that can withstand the weight of eggs and not break? How about building a bridge with just toothpicks, skewers, marshmallows and a whole lot of imagination?
A group of youth from the Lac La Biche area engaged in fun and exciting activities along with experiments at a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) camp last week. The camp took place at the Bold Center from Aug. 19-23.
Christina Oberg, from Lac La Biche Parish, said that during the camp, participants will conduct experiments, learn how to make observations, consider questions related to the experiments and develop hypotheses. They will also take part in engineering activities, building different structures and creative art projects. Mathematics will be incorporated into problem solving during the activities.
Oberg further said that the activities offered at STEAM camps aim to stimulate the curiosity of the children who attend and develop an interest in different ways of learning.
“STEAM camps are important because they encourage the development of creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a fun environment,” she told Lakeland This Week, adding that the skills learned in STEAM are transferable and useful in other areas of life.
“The goal is to help participants develop their critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills,” she said.
The week-long camp was one of several Lac La Biche Parish hosted this summer, others included Junior Volleyball, Junior Adventure, Mission Impossible and Creative Kids.
