A free family event in West Louisville helps build bridges to health care. The third annual Black Men's Wellness Day was held at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center. Hundreds of men received free health screenings on Saturday. In addition to the screenings, people could also speak with health professionals about how to better understand their health conditions and participate in a 5K run and walk. Event organizers said recent reports indicate that the average life expectancy of black men in West Louisville is 60 years, while the average life expectancy of black men in East Louisville is 79 years. Organizers say events like this are important for the community. “Events like this connect black men to health care providers and community resources, helping to bridge that gap and improve their health outcomes,” said Kamari Wooten, regional coordinator for Black Men's Wellness Day. The event also included more than 100 vendors, bounce houses for children, activities, a DJ and food. WLKY's Shaquille Lord was the emcee for the wellness event.
