Two Massachusetts hospitals owned by bankrupt Steward Healthcare are preparing to close next week. The closures of Kearney Hospital in Dorchester and Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer will leave about 1,200 employees out of work. Earlier this month, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu wrote to the owners of Kearney Hospital, urging them to use the property for medical purposes. “We need to have healthcare at that location, and the city will do whatever it takes, in whatever form, to make that happen,” Wu said. “We're going through a very complicated process with the state and the governor, and the governor is doing a great job trying to manage the many fallout from Steward's greed and past actions.” The state said it has staff on-site and is meeting one-on-one with workers to introduce people to new jobs. Dallas-based Steward Healthcare announced plans to close two hospitals in July while in the midst of bankruptcy proceedings. The embattled company is trying to sell its other hospitals in Massachusetts.
