LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Black Male Health Day was held Saturday at Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center in west Louisville.
The event, hosted by the African American Men's Health Organization, aimed to address health disparities in the black community and empower men to live healthier lifestyles.
The event offered free screenings, health and career resources, and a 5K walk/run.
Black men in America, as a group, have the shortest life expectancy in the country, due in part to high blood pressure, or hypertension.
According to AAMWA, more than 100 Black men were found to have high blood pressure during testing based on 2023 data.
Data for this year's event has not yet been released.
WHAS11 highlighted the importance of primary care through its “Color of Health” series of articles on some of the diseases and illnesses that have been found to be the leading causes of death among Black men.
Former NFL star and two-time Super Bowl champion Deon Branch served as honorary chairman of the event.
