APH officials hosted a free pop-up clinic in Austin on Saturday to get ahead of any potential outbreaks.
AUSTIN, Texas — With the World Health Organization declaring MPOX a global emergency, Austin Public Health is trying to get ahead of a potential local outbreak.
APH hosted a free MPOX vaccine clinic Saturday at Montropolis Recreation & Community Center in southeast Austin.
“We know it's spreading in other places, so we want to be prepared here,” said Eleanor Allan, emergency planning officer for Austin Public Health.
Allan said APH already met its goal of administering 30 vaccinations within the first hour of the three-hour event.
Allan says APH has seen several APH cases locally and the numbers are slowly trending up.
“For those at high risk or otherwise, keep an eye out for any skin rashes or skin lesions,” Allan says, “and if you're concerned, talk to your doctor.”
“Anyone who has had MPOX infection in the past 14 days or has had multiple sexual partners is eligible to be vaccinated,” Allan added.

APH is also seeking volunteers from the Medical Reserve Corps, who helped run the pop-up clinic Saturday. Those interested can find a link to more information at austintexas.gov/department/health.
