25 August 2024 – The beautiful Croatian Adriatic Sea is the cleanest sea in Europe, according to the European Environment Agency (EEA).
As Forbes Croatia writes, if you're dreaming of the perfect ocean to dive into, look no further than the waters lapping against Croatia's rugged coasts and beautiful islands. Whether you imagine yourself floating idly in Croatia's crystal clear Adriatic Sea, sunbathing on nearby Greece's scorching beaches, or enjoying the picturesque shores of neighboring Italy, the refreshing purity of the waters is key.
Clean ocean water is not just a matter of beauty and mesmerizing blue depths, it is also a key aspect of public health and environmental protection.
The Croatian Adriatic Sea – the cleanest sea in Europe
The European Environment Agency (EEA), working closely with the European Commission (EC), recently published its latest report, which included 22,081 locations across all EU member states, as well as Albania and Switzerland. Countries were ranked based on the quality of the cleanliness of their swimming water, using data collected in rigorous annual assessments. These assessments monitor for bacterial contaminants such as E. coli and enterococcus.
The grading process classifies water quality into four categories: excellent, good, satisfactory and poor. A rating of “excellent” means that the water meets the highest standards of cleanliness and safety, making it ideal for swimming and other recreational activities. That's exactly how Croatia's Adriatic Sea is classified.
The strict standards set out in the EU Bathing Beaches Directive, adopted in 2006, have significantly improved water quality across Europe. According to the latest report, 85% of Europe's popular bathing beaches have achieved the required “excellent” rating and 96% meet the minimum water quality standards. Only 1.5% of targeted areas were rated as poor, reflecting ongoing efforts to reduce pollution and improve water quality.
The Croatian Adriatic Sea – safe and beautiful
Croatia, known worldwide for its stunningly beautiful landscapes, is the country with the cleanest water in all of Europe, according to a new report: out of 894 locations tested across the Republic of Croatia, 99.1 percent were rated “excellent.”
Following Croatia on the list are Cyprus, neighbouring Greece and neighbouring Slovenia, which also score highly for their clean waters and beautiful beaches. These countries consistently meet the EU's very strict water quality standards, ensuring a safe and enjoyable swimming experience for tourists and locals alike.
