OpenAI has reportedly appointed former Meta executive Irina Kofman to oversee the company's strategic efforts.
Bloomberg News reported on Friday, citing a company spokesperson, that Coffman will report to OpenAI's technical chief Mira Murati and will initially focus on preparedness and safety measures. Coffman worked at Meta for five years, most recently as senior director of product management for generative artificial intelligence (AI), according to her LinkedIn profile.
AI startups like OpenAI are increasingly hiring executives from big tech companies, especially social media platforms, as they aim to compete with companies like Meta and Google, Bloomberg reported.
For example, OpenAI appointed former Instagram and Twitter executive Kevin Weil as its chief product officer and former Nextdoor CEO Sarah Friar as its chief financial officer in June, while rival AI company Anthropic hired former Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger as its chief product officer in May.
OpenAI has also suffered a high-profile exodus, with former co-founders John Shulman and researcher Jan Rijke both taking jobs at Anthropik.
OpenAI's other co-founder, Greg Brockman, announced earlier this month that he would be taking a leave of absence for the remainder of 2024.
“For the first time since I co-founded OpenAI 9 years ago, I feel relaxed,” he wrote in a post on X. “The mission is far from complete. We still have work to do to build safe AGI.”
AGI stands for “artificial general intelligence,” a yet-to-be-realized version of AI that can think and reason at the same level as humans.
Meanwhile, OpenAI last week announced an update to its AI capabilities, allowing developers to fine-tune GPT-4o, the company's most advanced language model, to fit their specific business needs. This long-requested feature from the tech industry paves the way for customized AI applications across industries. Fine-tuning is a process that allows developers to customize pre-trained AI models for specific tasks.
OpenAI explains that “developers can now fine-tune GPT-4o with custom datasets to achieve higher performance for specific use cases at lower cost. Fine-tuning allows the model to customize the structure and tone of responses or follow complex, domain-specific instructions.”
As PYMNTS noted, fine-tuning is crucial to commerce because it allows companies to create AI tools tailored to their needs, enhancing customer service, streamlining operations, and driving innovation.
“For example, a retail company could fine-tune GPT-4o to better understand product descriptions and customer inquiries,” the report states. “At the same time, a financial company could customize GPT-4o to analyze market trends and generate reports.”
