It's no coincidence that the eVX is debuting at an Indian trade show: Suzuki plans to manufacture the model at Maruti Suzuki in India for sale in global markets. The vehicle will be sold in India as the Maruti eVX at a later date.
However, according to a report by Autocar India, the focus will be on other markets after mass production begins in early 2025. In conversation with analysts, an unnamed senior executive at the company was quoted as saying: “We are hoping to formally unveil the BEV (born electric vehicle) at the Auto Expo in India in January next year and launch it in early 2025.”
The article does not provide any further data about the production version, which means it is still unclear how Suzuki will price the model in the competitive compact SUV landscape. The study of the eVX, due in 2023, is 4.30 metres long, 1.80 metres wide and 1.60 metres tall, making it slightly larger than the VW ID.3, a model widely used in Europe as a comparison. The eVX is 4 centimetres taller than the ID.3. The production version will likely only differ by a few centimetres.
The same may be true for the battery: the study mentioned an energy content of 60 kWh, but no further details on whether this was gross or net. Additionally, four-wheel drive is supposedly confirmed, but there are no further details on this point either.
Maruti Suzuki is building a pure electric vehicle factory in the Indian state of Gujarat with an annual production capacity of 1 million units, but the plant is not scheduled to start operations until 2028 or 2029. However, its existing factory in Gujarat is already capable of making electric cars and is also expanding its capacity.
When production starts in India early next year, all units will initially be exported. Further plans for the car after its launch in Europe and Japan are still unknown. Autocar India reports that the car was developed in close collaboration with Toyota, so a Toyota version of the eVX will also be released at a later date. But again, the timeline is still unclear.
