MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 27th
San Diego Padres vs St. Louis Cardinals
First Pitch – 7:45 PM EST
Nationals Park – Washington DC
Broadcast – MLB TV
The top of the first inning is where you're really going to get sweaty here. The Padres are a solid hitting team, ranking 11th in runs allowed. Knowing that and looking at Miles Mikolas' 5.19 ERA, it might seem odd that I'm favoring the NRFI here. But Mikolas has two advantages. First, he's off to a strong start, holding the Brewers scoreless for six innings, one of the better hitting teams in the major leagues. Second, he hasn't allowed a run in the first inning in two months. That's nine straight starts without allowing a run in the first inning. I'd bet on him to even out the 10th inning.
The bottom of the first inning shouldn't be too tough. Dylan Cease will pitch against a Cardinals team that hasn't impressed us much at the plate. They're in the bottom third of the league in runs scored and runs scored in the first inning. Cease isn't going to help things. It's the first time he's allowed more than three runs in a start since July 2. I expect him to close this one out on Tuesday.
NRFI/YRFI bets for August 27: No (TBD)
San Francisco Giants vs. Milwaukee Brewers
First Pitch – 8:10 PM EST
American Family Field – Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Giants will first try to upset our second NRFI, but I'm pretty confident they won't be able to do so. Not only are they a middling team in terms of offensive power, they're terrible early in games. They rank 25th in runs allowed per inning, just one-tenth of a point behind last. Facing standout rookie Tobias Myers won't alleviate that problem. He entered Tuesday with a 2.87 ERA and has allowed just six runs in his past five starts. He should pitch comfortably throughout the game, especially early in the game.
The Brewers are much better offensively, but they too have struggled in the first round. They are 9th in the league in runs scored, but fall into the bottom half of the league when it comes to the first round. Logan Webb is not the weak pitcher we need to correct this trend. He has allowed just 4 runs in his last 5 starts, and his strikeout numbers have increased in his last 2 games. He should take home the NRFI for us.
NRFI/YRFI bets for August 27: No (TBD)
