Sean O'Malley names Islam Makhachev as UFC pound-for-pound champion
In a recent interview with Helen Yee, O'Malley explained his position on the Makhachev v. Jones debate.
“Who's the greatest fighter right now? Probably Islam (Makhachev),” O'Malley said. “Jon Jones is one of them. I think Jon has only fought once in the last four or five years. Jon Jones is one of the greatest fighters of all time, but who's the greatest fighter right now? Like, the last four years? I'd say Islam, but Jon Jones is always going to be in the conversation.” (via MMA Junkie)
Jones is set to return in November, likely against Stipe Miocic, after being forced to withdraw from last year's UFC 295 due to an injury.
Makhachev recently defeated Dustin Poirier at UFC 302. His return date is unclear as he is currently nursing a hand injury.
O'Malley disagrees with his boss' stance as the UFC's pound-for-pound debate rages on, and while Makhachev and Jones are both close to returning, the rankings debate is likely to continue in their absence.
