Ever since student organisations began demanding the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the rape and murder case at Kolkata's RG Kaur Hospital, Nabanna Abhijan has been one of the top trending topics on Google searches.
The Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj (West Bengal Students' Association) is planning to lead a march to the West Bengal state secretariat, Nabanna, on Tuesday to press home its demands, but the movement seeking justice in the RG Kalu case is divided, with the CPI(M) and the Indian National Congress withdrawing from the march alleging that some of the organisers have “RSS links”.
According to trending.google, there were more than 10,000 searches in the hours leading up to Tuesday's protests, with searches for the topic also up 100 percent.
West Bengal police called the “Nabanna Abhijani” proposal “illegal” and said they had taken necessary precautions amid fears of possible security problems during the protests.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has described the rally as a “conspiracy” to create chaos on the streets and released several videos that appear to show suspected BJP leaders from Ghattal in Paschim Medinipur district planning to instigate violence at the demonstrations. The Indian Express has not independently verified the authenticity of the videos.
