(Reuters) – Tesla Inc (TSLA) Chief Executive Elon Musk, who also owns the social media platform “X”, said on Monday he thinks California should pass an AI bill that would require technology companies and AI developers to conduct safety testing on some of their models.
“For over 20 years, I have advocated for regulating AI, just as we do any product or technology that poses potential risks to the public,” Musk said in a post on X, urging states to pass SB 1047.

California lawmakers have tried to introduce 65 AI-related bills this term, according to a state legislative database, including measures to ensure that all algorithmic decisions are provable as fair and to protect the intellectual property of deceased people from exploitation by AI companies. Many of the bills have already died.
The same day, Microsoft (MSFT)-backed OpenAI voiced support for another California AI bill, AB 3211, which would require tech companies to label AI-generated content, ranging from harmless memes to deepfakes aimed at spreading misinformation about political candidates.
As countries accounting for a third of the world's population hold elections this year, experts are concerned about the role that AI-generated content will play, and it has already been prominent in some elections, such as in Indonesia.
