Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a third price increase for the PS5 in Japan, starting in September 2024. Both the disc and digital versions of the PS5 will see a price increase of 13,000 yen, which is just under $100. In addition, the prices of various accessories, including the DualSense controller, will also increase.
Will the PS5 price increase in the US and Europe in 2024?
Sony announced its latest price increases in Japan this morning on the region's PS Blog, and as you might expect, the news was not well received. Not only will the PS5 and all of its accessories (including headsets and PS Portal) be increasing in price, but the already struggling PSVR 2 will also be increasing in price from September 2nd.
“We have reached this decision in consideration of the recent harsh external environment, including fluctuations in the global economy, and the impact it has on our business,” Sony explained. “We ask for your understanding as we continue to provide our customers with the best gaming experience and operate our business in a stable manner.”
Western players are already concerned that prices may rise in several other countries as well — the PS5 has seen price increases in Europe before, but has mostly avoided hikes in the U.S. At the time of writing, there's been no word on how this will affect other regions.
