NEW YORK, NY — NYC Health + Hospitals announced today that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the accountable agency responsible for ensuring nursing homes meet certain quality standards, has awarded five public long-term care facilities in New York City a five-star quality rating. The facilities are NYC Health + Hospitals/Carter (Harlem), Coler (Roosevelt Island), Gouverneur (Lower Manhattan), McKinney (Brooklyn) and Sea View (Staten Island). All of NYC Health + Hospitals' long-term care facilities received an overall five-star rating from CMS, except for NYC Health + Hospitals/Coler. The stars tell New Yorkers and prospective patients how well a facility cares for the physical and clinical needs of its residents.
CMS ratings are determined by three criteria across three areas, including health inspections, staffing levels and resident-level quality measures.
Health Inspections: This rating includes the last three health inspections and investigations due to complaints. All information is collected by trained and objective inspectors. Staffing: This rating is determined using staffing data and includes the number of hours of care that nursing staff provide on average per day to each resident, taking into account the different levels of care residents require. Quality Measures (QM): This provides insight into how well a care home is caring for the physical and clinical needs of its residents.
“The Five-Star CMS Quality Rating recently achieved by our post-acute facilities is a testament to the comprehensive, person-centered care, compassion and dignity we provide to New Yorkers as long-term care and rehabilitation become a path to recovery and maintaining independence,” said Dr. Khoi Luong, senior vice president of post-acute care at NYC Health + Hospitals.
“We are extremely proud that all of our post-acute facilities have once again received five stars for quality,” said Marisol Arroyo, MPH, CPHQ, LNHA, chief quality officer for post-acute care at NYC Health + Hospitals. “This demonstrates our team's commitment to providing the highest quality care and safety for our short-term rehab patients and long-term residents.”
“One of the key components of maintaining five-star ratings is staffing, and we have revised our staffing plan to not only meet but exceed the state-recommended daily staffing hours per resident,” said Marian McNamara, RN, MSN, chief nursing officer, Post Acute Care, at NYC Health + Hospitals. “This rating demonstrates the exceptional quality of care provided to our resident post-acute care nursing team, who are truly the heart of health care.”
“We are proud to be one of the best nursing homes in New York State and to have received a five-star rating (the highest rating) from CMS, which is due to the contributions of our outstanding staff in providing high-quality care,” said Susan Sales, MPA, FACHE, LNHA, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur. “This recognition would not have been possible without the efforts of our hard-working interdisciplinary team, including nurses, physicians, dietitians, rehabilitation specialists, and the many support departments that help run Gouverneur.”
“While the 5-star CMS rating system helps define our success, it is the daily commitment and dedication of our staff that has helped us maintain these rankings,” said Matthew Levy, MHA, LNHA, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Sea View. “Our staff is trained to treat all residents with the utmost respect and ensure their dignity is maintained. We have built strong, trusting relationships with our residents, patients, and their families. This is the home of over 300 residents/patients and we want them to be completely comfortable, comfortable with our approach, and as cooperative as possible.”
“Kolah's consistent five-star quality ratings are a testament to our frontline staff's pursuit of excellence in the delivery of resident-centered care,” said Steven Catullo, MBA, LNHA, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Kolah. “They set the standard for quality and inspire all those around them to provide safe, effective care and treatment to our residents.”
“We are honored that Carter has continued to receive the Five Star Quality Rating,” said Floyd Long, MBA, LNHA, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Carter. “The Five Star Quality Rating System is a tool that provides those seeking skilled nursing care the opportunity to review and compare their performance. It plays a vital role in the mission of NYC Health + Hospitals, and our goal is to continually improve our performance and remain a high-performing organization.”
“Five stars are important to McKinney residents and their families. It demonstrates that we operate at an exemplary level, building trust and ensuring our staff does the right thing every time,” said David Weinstein, MA, HSA, LNHA, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/McKinney. “Having the right resources in the right places has enabled us to maintain the highest standards. Our staff takes great pride in their work and I salute them all for their continued commitment to excellence.”
NYC Health + Hospitals' post-acute long-term care facilities currently serve 1,500 patients/residents ages 27-110 from throughout New York City.
