What a great week for the Dodgers!
The Los Angeles Dodgers enter a big week holding a slim lead over their National League West rivals, having won five of their six home games against the Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays at Dodger Stadium to move three games up in the division.
The highlight of the week was Shohei Ohtani's spectacular walk-off grand slam on Friday night, joining the 40-40 club. Ohtani's walk-off homer was one of many game-winning and game-winning home runs the Dodgers recorded during an eventful week.
Here are the top 10 baseball moments from last week.
Honorable mentions: LA Kings Day, Lakers Weekend, Justin Turner returns to Dodger Stadium
10. The Dodgers acquired Leo Rivas as catcher.
In the top of the ninth inning, Mariners pitcher Leo Rivas attempted to steal base after the ball bounced off catcher Will Smith's glove, and Rivas nearly made it, but Smith quickly got after the ball and threw to Daniel Hudson for the out before Rivas reached home plate.
9. Gavin Lux homer against the Mariners
Lux continued his hot batting form by hitting back-to-back home runs against the Mariners last week, his second of two in the fourth inning when the Dodgers were trailing 3-0.
The home run was confusing as it went under the wall and back onto the field, but was correctly ruled a home run.
8. Tommy Edman and Miguel Rojas put in some great plays at shortstop.
The Dodgers entered the season with a major problem at shortstop, but now have two options at the position. Both Edman and Rojas could make diving catches and throws quickly to first or second base to get runners out.
7. Max Muncy returns from the IL with a two-run homer.
Muncy finally returned to the Dodgers after a lengthy stint on the disabled list following an oblique injury, and in his first game back from the disabled list, he hit a two-run home run to help the Dodgers beat the Mariners 3–0.
6. Mookie Betts' game-tying double
The Dodgers were down 3-2 in the seventh inning of the second game against the Mariners when Mookie Betts came to bat and tied the game with a key double to right field that helped the Dodgers mount a late comeback.
5. Pitcher of the Week: Gavin Stone
Stone appeared in two games last week, pitching seven innings in each game despite not having done so since late June. The 25-year-old allowed just five hits, four walks and one earned run while striking out 17 batters.
4. Kiké Hernández's game-tying three-run homer
With the Dodgers trailing the Rays 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Hernandez hit a three-run home run to tie the game at 3-3. The Dodgers eventually won, 7-3.
3. Mookie Betts' game-winning two-run homer
Betts led off the Dodgers' scoring on Sunday, hitting a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Dodgers a 2-1 lead. Los Angeles went on to win the game, 3-1.
2. Jason Heyward, pinch-hit three-run home run
Last Tuesday, with the Dodgers and Mariners tied at 3-3, Heyward came in to pitch in the eighth inning and hit a three-run homer to lead the Dodgers to a 6-3 victory. Despite the game-winning homer, Heyward was released two days later, to the dismay of his teammates.
1. Shohei Ohtani joins the 40-40 club with a walk-off grand slam
Was there any question as to what would be number one?
The Dodgers designated hitter came to bat with 39 home runs and 40 stolen bases and the game tied at 3-3. As the story goes, Ohtani hit a walk-off grand slam to give the Dodgers a 7-3 victory, making Ohtani just the sixth player in MLB history to become a member of the 40-40 club. The grand slam solidified Ohtani's status as the fastest player to reach 40-40 in a season and will go down as one of the best moments of the season.
