Google Meet is adding a new AI tool called “Make Notes” that generates a summary of key points during a video call. Instead of a word-for-word transcription, the feature uses Gemini AI to record key discussion points in a Google Doc that appears in the meeting host's Google Drive. The document can be automatically sent to attendees after the call or added to a Calendar event. It will also include links to the meeting recording and transcript, if these features are enabled.
Gemini Enterprise, Gemini Education Premium, and Google Workspace customers with the AI Meetings & Messaging add-on will be the first to have access to the note-taking feature. Currently, the feature is only available in English and is limited to computer or laptop meetings.
The tech company announced plans to incorporate generative AI into more of its services last year and has been aggressively building AI capabilities into its hardware and software since then. The company's Gemini AI assistant is being built into Android and the Workspace app. As always, the usefulness of these features may vary depending on how well the AI works and how accurate it is. The specter of Google's AI Overviews telling people to eat glue pizza will continue to haunt the company's ongoing efforts in this space.
