FREMONT, Ohio (WTVG) – The heatwaves hit at the worst possible time at Time Out Sports Bar in Van Ness.
“It's just another struggle as a small business owner,” owner Dean Van Ness said. “It's just too hot for my staff to work today.”
Van Ness said the air conditioner in her home broke on Aug. 27, 2024, the same day the temperature felt like it exceeded 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
A new system has already been ordered and is expected to arrive later this week, so Van Ness decided to close the business until the replacement HVAC system is up and running.
“We're just trying to get the fans running and keep the equipment cool and try to salvage what we have here,” Van Ness added.
Within Tiffin City Schools, four buildings, including Tiffin-Columbian High School, do not have central air conditioning, which is why Superintendent Jerry Nadeau and other administrators decided to postpone the first day of school and cancel classes for two days.
“We are looking to start the school year on a positive note and feel we made the right decision during this heat wave,” Nadeau explained.
Tiffin City Schools will start the school year with a two-day disaster holiday. The official start of the school year for the district is Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024.
Meanwhile, the Toledo Lucas County Health Department also closed for the day, after a spokesman said it was experiencing problems with its air conditioning system.

“Due to the extremely high temperatures, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily close our Health Department building at 635 North Erie Street in Toledo to ensure your safety and health.
The health department's air conditioning system is not functioning efficiently and is unable to provide adequate cooling during high temperatures, affecting the comfort and safety of all who use the facility.
All Reproductive Health and WIC clinical appointments at the downtown location will be rescheduled.
The Health Department will resume normal operations on Wednesday, August 28. In the meantime, we urge everyone to take the necessary precautions to stay safe, including staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous exercise and staying in air-conditioned environments.
