LAS VEGAS — VMware Explore 2024 — Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO), which recently acquired VMware, today announced the development of an entire Software-Defined Edge product portfolio to enable enterprises to support Edge AI workloads through new and enhanced connectivity, deployment and lifecycle management capabilities, including:
The VMware VeloCloud Edge 710 appliance and the new VMware VeloCloud Edge 720 and 740 appliances support a combination of Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and satellite connectivity. Enhancements to VMware VeloCloud SASE, Secured by Symantec, integrates VeloCloud with Symantec Points of Presence (PoPs). VMware Edge Compute Stack product enhancements.
According to IDC, worldwide spending on edge computing is expected to reach $232 billion in 2024, a 15.4% increase over 2023. Edge computing is expected to play a pivotal role in the adoption of AI applications. (1) Broadcom is evolving its software-defined edge portfolio to help enterprises address the growing number of AI and non-AI workloads at the edge. Edge AI workloads are deployed in geographically distributed locations to enhance business operations to reduce costs, increase revenue, and improve compliance. Unlike traditional IT workloads that are centralized in data centers, edge AI workloads such as video inference cameras, industrial control systems, and other OT (operational technology) devices and applications are deployed locally, are largely autonomous, orchestrated rather than managed, consumed where data is created, and driven by business units.
Broadcom defines software-defined edge as a distributed digital infrastructure to connect, secure and run workloads in multiple locations, closer to the endpoints that generate or consume data – wherever users and devices are – in the office, on the move, at cell sites, retail stores, factories and more. Broadcom addresses three layers of the software-defined edge: an edge computing stack that hosts applications and workloads, an intelligent overlay where connectivity and security services run across the WAN, and an underlay network layer that runs software for network connectivity across fixed and 5G networks to provide orchestration and network programmability.
“We are focused on enabling enterprises to adopt edge AI workloads,” said Sanjay Uppal, vice president and general manager, Software Defined Edge, Broadcom. “We announced support for fixed wireless access and satellite connectivity on VMware VeloCloud Edge, enabling critical mixed connectivity for OT devices as well as AI and non-AI edge workloads. We are uniquely offering enterprises a better, better, best approach to connectivity at the edge by enabling them to tune real-time WAN performance, gain insights from their network and program the network. This underlay network integration enables enterprises to build a network in minutes to support current and future workloads.”
Integrated FWA and satellite support enhances connectivity for edge AI workloads
Addressing the need for more robust connectivity to support edge computing and edge AI workloads, Broadcom today announced enhancements to the VMware VeloCloud Edge 710 appliance and introduced the new VMware VeloCloud Edge 720 and 740 appliances. VeloCloud Edge 710 provides enterprises with a combination of broadband, FWA and satellite connectivity to significantly improve real-time voice, video and application traffic for enhanced connectivity at the edge. This blended connectivity allows enterprises to have redundant, always-on connections for edge devices and workloads. Additionally, Communications Service Providers (CSPs) can use the VeloCloud Edge 710, 720 and 740 appliances to further modernize their infrastructure and monetize their services by offering premium combined SD-WAN, FWA and satellite services supporting edge deployments to their enterprise customers. CSPs running both VeloCloud SD-WAN and VMware Telco Cloud Platform benefit from being able to use insights from the network to program the real-time performance of their WAN. PoP integration improves enterprise cloud connectivity
Broadcom today announced initial integration of VeloCloud SD-WAN points of presence (PoPs) with Symantec PoPs to better support enterprise cloud connectivity. The integration further automates cloud access without compromising performance and security. VeloCloud SASE customers protected by Symantec will also benefit from increased bandwidth and availability, reduced latency, and global access to leading cloud and SaaS providers. Earlier this year, Broadcom announced the availability of VeloCloud SASE protected by Symantec, a single-vendor SASE solution. This solution is the culmination of a joint effort to integrate best-in-class VeloCloud SD-WAN and Symantec Security Service Edge (SSE) capabilities, providing significant benefits to Broadcom's VeloCloud and Symantec customers.
Simplify deployment and lifecycle management of edge AI workloads
The distributed nature of the edge presents numerous challenges for enterprises and their IT teams, including managing edge devices, applications and infrastructure across hundreds, if not thousands, of locations. To accelerate turnkey deployment of secure edge environments, enterprises are investing in solutions that enable zero-touch provisioning and application lifecycle management. VMware Edge Compute Stack, an edge-optimized runtime and orchestration platform, enables smooth management of edge apps and infrastructure across many sites with limited resources. With its last two releases, VMware Edge Compute Stack has delivered key capabilities to efficiently manage infrastructure and applications, including workloads such as edge AI apps and small language models (SLMs) across distributed sites.
Zero-touch orchestration: VMware Edge Cloud Orchestrator leverages GitOps and desired state management to simplify deployment and application lifecycle management across multiple sites. Automating these processes enables enterprises to operate consistently and efficiently, even with limited IT resources. Pull-based architecture: Hosts always initiate communication to the management plane as keep-alives to get configuration changes. This architecture reduces the load on the management plane and enables much higher scale. Edge infrastructure and application monitoring: Configure collection and transmission of metrics for infrastructure, virtual machines and Kubernetes-based workloads. It comes with sample implementations of industry-standard monitoring tools and pre-built dashboards to help customers achieve comprehensive local edge monitoring in minutes.
These capabilities simplify the deployment and management of Edge AI workloads, helping enterprises realize the business benefits of their Edge AI investments more quickly. The recent release of VMware Edge Compute Stack 3.6 adds new capabilities that make it even easier to deploy and manage the edge at scale.
