Microchip Technology Inc., a U.S. semiconductor manufacturer, was hit by a cyber attack that disrupted operations at several of its manufacturing plants. On August 17, 2024, the company detected suspicious activity related to its IT infrastructure.
The attack severely impacted the company's production capabilities, forcing it to shut down or isolate some systems to contain the incident. Microchip Technology has engaged external cybersecurity experts to launch an investigation into the security breach. The company acknowledged that the attack affected its ability to fulfill orders.
“On August 17, 2024, Microchip Technology Incorporated (the “Company”) detected potentially suspicious activity related to its information technology (“IT”) systems. Upon detecting the issue, the Company began taking steps to evaluate, contain and remediate the potentially unauthorized activity. On August 19, 2024, the Company determined that an unauthorized third party had disrupted the use of certain of the Company's servers and some of its business operations. The Company promptly took additional steps to address the incident, including isolating the affected systems, shutting down certain systems, and initiating an investigation with the assistance of an external cybersecurity advisor,” the company said in a FORM 8-K report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). “As a result of this incident, some of our manufacturing facilities are operating at lower than normal levels and our order fulfillment capabilities are currently impacted.”
