A fifth suspect has been charged after a deadly shooting at a Birmingham apartment last week that was streamed live on Facebook video.
A 17-year-old man was taken into custody Wednesday in connection with the death of 21-year-old Asia Alice Poole. He is the fifth person charged in the case but the fourth to be charged with murder.
His name is not being released because of his age. He is being held without bail in the Jefferson County Jail.
The other suspects charged with murder are Akoleya Denae Woods, 20, who was arrested Tuesday, and Justin Jaymond Hendricks, 20, and Taylor McCloud, 22, who were taken into custody last week.
Janiya Hendrix, 19, who was fighting with Poole before the shots rang out, was charged with first-degree motor vehicle theft after allegedly fleeing the chaotic scene in the town of Poole.
Janiyah Hendricks and Justin Hendricks are siblings whose father was shot and killed in 2022 when he stopped at an ATM in Homewood on his way home from church.
Acquaintances of Poole said there was an ongoing dispute between her and Janiya Hendrix over a man.
The incident culminated on Aug. 20 when two women began fighting in a parking lot.
It escalated into a brawl and gunfight at the Monarch Ridge apartment complex on Gallant Drive, formerly known as Valley Brook.
The video showed the pool area involved in a fight that began with Janiya Hendrix and later involved multiple people.
The shooting appears to have started near Poole's car in a parking lot, then moved into a hallway in one of the apartment buildings, where a hail of bullets fell.
The brawl and subsequent shooting was captured on Facebook Live video. Police recovered 168 shell casings.
Poole was pronounced dead at the scene. Her best friend was shot in the hip but survived.
Poole, of Monarch Ridge, leaves behind a daughter who started kindergarten this week. Her 21-year-old father died July 26.
The investigation is ongoing.
Police are asking anyone with information or additional video about the incident to call detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
