MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 29th
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Boston Red Sox
First Pitch – 7:10 PM EST
Fenway Park – Boston, Massachusetts
Broadcast – ESPN+
Toronto will face Cutter Crawford on Thursday in Game 1 at Boston. The Red Sox right-hander will try to get the NRFI off to a good start against a team that isn't as strong offensively. The Blue Jays rank in the bottom third of the league in runs scored this year. Plus, they scored just three runs on Tuesday and their hitting hasn't been good in Game 3 of the series.
Crawford's luck has turned around. He's held two tough opponents, the Diamondbacks and the Orioles, to just two and three runs in his past two starts. After those two starts, the Blue Jays' offense will feel like a respite for him.
The Red Sox have been hitting well lately, but I'm still going to rely on Bowden Francis to close out the NRFI. He pitched well in his last outing, pitching a no-hitter through the 9th inning with 12 strikeouts, but he's also been good in his previous three outings. In those outings, he pitched 19.0 innings, struck out 22 batters and allowed just three runs. He should be able to get three outs early here before the Red Sox's lineup gets going.
NRFI/YRFI bets on August 29: No (-120)
Kansas City Royals vs. Houston Astros
First Pitch – 8:10 PM EST
Minute Maid Park – Houston, Texas
Broadcast – MLB TV
This is a game that features two high-octane offenses, but I plan to take advantage of the pitcher's duel and get the perfect six outs.
Hunter Brown is the starting pitcher for NRFI. In his last four starts (24.1 innings), he has allowed just five earned runs. His ERA over that span is 1.85. He has 25 strikeouts and has done so while facing a tough lineup. No matter how good the Royals are, I'd trust him to pitch well.
I feel the same way about Brady Singer's late innings. He's been hitting a lot more easily lately, but he's still holding a 3.38 ERA going into Thursday's game. And his strikeout numbers are up a notch, too. He's recorded a combined 20 strikeouts in his last three starts, which should help him out if he's in a pinch here.
NRFI/YRFI bets on August 29: No (-125)
