Mary Lim Thiam Suan
The Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) has appointed former Malaysian judge Mary Lim Thiam Suan as its new president, succeeding Sandra Rajoo.
“(Mr Lim) will build on the strong foundations established by his predecessors to position AIAC as one of the leading arbitration institutions in Asia and beyond,” the AIAC told the Asia Business Law Journal.
Mr Lim is a former judge of the Federal Court of Malaysia and chairs the ad hoc committee of the AIAC Arbitration Tribunal. He was the founding judge of the Construction Court in Kuala Lumpur and has conducted workshops on criminal, civil and appellate advocacy. He also teaches advanced advocacy courses at Keble College, Oxford.
The appointment follows consultations between the Malaysian Government and the Asian-African Legal Consultative Commission (AALCO) under the Host Country Agreement.
“Based on the supplemental agreement to the Host Country Agreement signed between the Malaysian government and AALCO in February 2024, the overall goal is to restore confidence in the (alternative dispute resolution) ADR community and AIAC's reform initiatives are in line with global standards and best practices,” AIAC told Asia Business Law Journal.
