To raise awareness of childhood cancer, the Phillies will host their eighth annual Childhood Cancer Awareness Night, presented by Nemours Children's Health, prior to their nationally televised ESPN game against the Atlanta Braves at 7:10 pm on Sunday, September 1. The special on-field ceremony will begin at 6:35 pm and provide heartwarming moments and once-in-a-lifetime experiences for families affected by cancer.
Participants included people receiving treatment at Nemours Children's Hospital in Delaware and members of the Kisses for Kyle Foundation, which supports families battling childhood cancer in the Delaware Valley region with a variety of programs, services and special events.
Members of the Phillies family who have been affected by childhood cancer will be taking part in the evening, including second baseman Bryson Stott, who lost his best friend Cooper Ricciardi to cancer, infielder Weston Wilson, whose brother Spencer has twice beaten rare tissue cancer, shortstop Trea Turner, a longtime supporter of the V Cancer Research Foundation, assistant general manager Ned Rice, whose daughter Winnie is battling cancer, and batboy Adam Crognale, a lymphoma survivor and advocate for kids with cancer.
Players will also wear “Corey's Promise” T-shirts during batting practice in honor of Philadelphia Phillies minor league pitcher Corey Phelan, who died two years ago at age 20 after a battle with cancer.
Additionally, proceeds from the evening's Phillies Charities Inc. 50/50 raffle drawing will benefit the Nemours Foundation. Additionally, players and field personnel will wear gold ribbons and wristbands in support of the effort. Children age 14 and under will be given Phillies Gold wristbands and all fans will receive a Phillies Go Gold print at the gates. The event will also be streamed live on @Phillies social media channels and on phillies.com.
