LONDON — European markets rose at the opening of trading on Thursday as investors focused on economic data across the region and gauged the tech sector after Nvidia's earnings report on Wednesday.
The pan-European Stoxx 600 index was up 0.33% as of 8:24 a.m. London time, with major regional bourses and sectors mostly rising. Oil and gas and insurance stocks were slightly lower, while technology stocks were up 0.85%.
This comes after the Stoxx 600 closed higher on Wednesday.
In European data, the Spanish National Statistics Institute said its preliminary consumer price index rose to 2.2% in August. Germany is due to release inflation data on Thursday, along with an outlook for the euro zone economy.
Investors were keeping a close eye on the tech sector after artificial intelligence giant Nvidia reported its latest quarterly results. The AI chipmaker beat expectations and provided better-than-expected earnings guidance for the current quarter, but traders were hoping for further earnings growth.
Nvidia shares fell during trading hours after the earnings report as investors focus on ripple effects for the broader technology, AI and semiconductor industries.
Asia-Pacific markets fell on Thursday, with the technology sector weighing on some regional indexes, while U.S. futures were mixed after Wednesday's decline.
