Team members from the Warfighter Readiness, Performance and Brain Health Project Management Office will be showcasing the latest in military medical hardware and technology developments this week as part of the Military Health Systems Research Symposium, taking place Aug. 26-29, 2024, in Kissimmee, Fla.
The WRPBH team leads the development and acquisition of products that meet the capability requirements of our nation's warfighters.
At this year's symposium, WRPBH's Analyzer Traumatic Brain Injury (ATBI) team was recognized for their excellence, receiving the Defense Health Agency's Outstanding Program Management Team Award on the first day of MHSRS.
Developed in collaboration with industry partner Abbott, the ATBI program aims to provide U.S. Joint Forces medical personnel with a portable assessment tool to screen patients suspected of having TBI on or near the front line. The device, which can test plasma or whole blood, detects chemical markers in the sample that may be indicative of TBI.
“Receiving this award is a direct reflection of what a group of leading experts in a challenging field of medicine has truly accomplished,” said Damien Hoffman, product manager for the ATBI program. “The contributions of my teammates at USAMMDA, as well as our partners in the Department of Defense, academia and industry, have helped drive significant progress in traumatic brain injury.”
During the symposium's exhibit hours, WRPBH representatives displayed their latest programs and devices and met with stakeholders from across the Department of Defense and development experts from academia and the development industry. According to U.S. Army Lt. Col. Dana Bal, product manager for WRPBH, the symposium is an important venue for USAMMDA's advanced developers to share information about notable successes and meet with potential new partners for future programs.
“Events like MHSRS are great opportunities for WRPBH and USAMMDA,” said Bal, “to showcase what we do every day to our partners in the Department of Defense, development industry and academia. It also allows us to connect with other organizations and development professionals who may not be aware of what we do and build relationships for potential future partnerships that contribute to our mission of supporting the warfighter.”
WRPBH is just one of four USAMMDA PMOs showcasing the latest developments in military health care at this year's MHSRS. The symposium is especially notable due to the evolving structure of USAMMDA and the transformation of efforts in U.S. military health care. Three of USAMMDA's project management offices (WRPBH, Warfighter Protection and Acute Care, and Combatant Expeditionary Medicine and Treatment) are continuing their organizational transition to the Defense Health Agency. The Soldier Medical Equipment PMO is transitioning to the Soldier Program Implementation Office.
USAMMDA develops, delivers and deploys critical medicines, vaccines, biologicals, devices and medical support equipment to protect and sustain the lives of warfighters around the world. USAMMDA project managers guide the development of medical products for the U.S. Army Medical Department, other U.S. Armed Forces, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Defense Health Agency and the U.S. Special Operations community.
This process provides promising technologies from DoD, industry and academia to the U.S. military, from the testing required for U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval or licensure through fielding and sustaining the finished product. The USAMMDA Project Management Office will transition to a Program Implementation Office under the jurisdiction of the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Acquisition and Sustainment for the Defense Health Agency.
