– I work with the elderly. Those who are cared for in welfare homes are still somehow able to cope. Those who are left alone, this end of their life is very sad. – I see these pensioners, they don't have coconuts. Pensioners have 1,400 pensions. Expensive bills, expensive electricity, our interlocutors said when we asked if they noticed poverty in Poland. In recent years, the Vistula region has seen an increase in the level of extreme poverty, especially among children and the elderly. The troubling trend continued after inflation hit in 2021, when prices for food, medicine and utilities began to rise faster than average incomes. WP reporter Marek Gorczak asked the residents of Białystok what their life is like, and whether they have noticed an increase in the level of poverty. – I see how it is. Life is getting harder. The pension does not increase for survival. If you have no stock or anything to sell, you are already in poverty. Things are not as easy as they used to be. Living on one pension is difficult. – My profit is not much, but I can manage it in such a way that I can buy what I need. You should think about what you are spending your money on.
