On Monday night, Russian troops shelled Kharkov. Ole Sinegbou, head of the regional military administration, reported on social media that some shells hit the city center at around 9:00 pm local time (8:00 pm Polish time, editor's note).
One of the bombs struck Derziprom, a historic 1928 skyscraper on Freedom Square. The official stressed, “The collision was registered in the administration building. Several floors were destroyed.''
Ukraine. The Russians hit a national monument. “Several floors were destroyed.”
Hundreds of windows in nearby buildings were broken. “Six people are known to have been injured, but their condition is mild and moderate. No serious cases have been recorded,” Sinagbou added.
In the next entry, the head of the Kharkiv junta posted a photo of the destroyed Derzhprom. “This is a building of national importance, and one built in the Constructivist style,” he wrote.
“The occupiers attacked an iconic symbol of the city that every resident of Kharkiv knows. This is Russian terrorism,” the official said.
Kharkov. Györgyprom is a candidate for inscription on the UNESCO list
Derzhprom (State Council) was the first skyscraper built in the then Soviet Union in the late 1920s. Until 1934, when Kharkiv remained the capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, the most important government institutions were located in Kharkiv.
During World War II, the Germans tried to blow up the distinctive building, but it ultimately didn't happen.
The Deltprom complex consists of three H-shaped buildings ranging from 6 to 11 floors. The tallest object is 68 meters high. In 1954, one of the first television antennas in the USSR was installed on the roof of one of the buildings. This brings the total height of the tallest tower to 108 meters.
In January 2018, Derzhprom was added to the list of monuments of national importance by a decree of the Government of Ukraine. The complex is also a candidate for inclusion on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
