President Vladimir Putin said before the exercise that it concerns activities aimed at controlling the use of weapons through the actual launch of ballistic and cruise missiles. The dictator stressed that the equipment used was an “extreme measure to ensure the security of the country.”
According to official information provided by the Russian Ministry of Defense, the training was carried out simultaneously in several locations. Cineva and Bulava ballistic missiles were launched from submarines in the Barents Sea.
The Yaz intercontinental ballistic missile was tested at one of Kamchatka's training grounds. In addition, Tu-95MS aircraft also participated in the exercise and fired cruise missiles.

“I would like to emphasize that we will not allow ourselves to be drawn into another arms race, but we will maintain our strategic forces at the necessary level,” he said.
President Putin announced the exercise, calling it “another exercise of the strategic forces in the field of deterrence.”
– We will practice arms control activities through the actual launch of ballistic and cruise missiles (…) In accordance with the national armament plan, we will systematically modify our strategic missile forces (…). Putin added that this is due to increased accuracy, reduced launch preparation time and, crucially, improved ability to defeat anti-missile defense systems.
