In Spain, the cleanup continues after the floods that devastated the eastern part of the country this week. Emergency services are supported by thousands of volunteers who are often able to walk into devastated cities. We at Kontakt24 have received material that shows the situation in Valencia.
The meteorological phenomenon DANA (depresion alasada en niveles altos) brought heavy rains in Spain. The streets of many cities were filled with water and mud, and people were stuck in their homes and cars. The death toll was 214 on Sunday, but Transport Minister Oscar Puente explained that it could rise further.
– On the surface, in the most accessible places, where most of the work is done, we rarely see victims, – he explained. “However, there are still many basements, garages and underwater parking lots where there are bodies, but we have to go there to find out.”

In Valencia, where the post-flood situation is the most difficult, more than 200 people have died. Search and rescue operations continued in many cities on Sunday and clean-up efforts began. More than 4,300 soldiers are involved in the operations – as the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, promised on Saturday, 5,000 soldiers and 5,000 policemen should operate in the affected areas. Volunteers from Valencia and its surroundings are also helping flood victims.
We were contacted by Mr. Cesari, who lives in Spain. The man sent us a video showing the situation after the flood. The recording shows the road from Valencia to the commune of Catarroja, which was badly damaged by the elements.
– I have been living in Spain for two and a half years, although I am not there at all, because I am a sailor and I live partly in Spain and partly in the Caribbean. My wife and I are still in good shape because we live in a flood-free district. The only impact we feel is that stores are not delivering. If something disappears from the shelf, it will not be found there. In general, there is no subway and no trains, especially to Madrid. Only buses are moving normally. People here are very organized. Thousands of people walked three miles to help the nearby village of Valencia. Shovels and necessary equipment were collected. They want to clear all roads to restore communication and delivery to stores. There are soldiers on the streets, and everywhere the police slow down the traffic and do not allow cars. They have to take detours. This is somehow organized, he explained.
– There is a person who directs the traffic, someone else divides the work. When I got on my bike, I saw that many things had already been cleared and the cars that were obstructing the traffic were immediately taken away. In these villages, it is more disastrous, dirt and unpleasant smell, he added.
