First, the stars of the middle generation of American jazz. Then a musical tribute to two great figures of the genre: Sun Ra and Faora Sanders. Finally, the guitar finale with King Crimson musicians in the main role. All three days of the Jazz Jamboree will have a different character and each promises to be interesting.
The festival kicks off on Friday with the Joanna Duda Trio. The leader of the trio is a pianist who has been a supporter of Wojtek Mazolewski's quintet for many years. But at the same time, he develops his own experimental projects, combining elements of jazz and electronica. And this is the face of his trio with drummer Michal Brindal and double bassist Maximilian Mucha.
The evening will continue in the experimental spirit by the group of Chris Davis, a renowned and award-winning pianist from Canada who has been working in New York for two decades. Davies will be performing his popular project Diatom Ribbons, inspired by nature – structures made of microalgae. The pianist is accompanied by trumpet player Val Genty and drummer Terry Lyne Carrington. The organizers announce the collision of three different worlds: free improvisation on the piano, sound art on helicopters and excellent and powerful drumming.
Christian Scott aTunde Ajuah also has a well-deserved reputation as an innovator and one of the most important artists of his generation (40+). The last two parts are not only an expression of respect for the trumpeter's African roots (aTunde and Adjuah are ancient cities in Ghana), but also the direction of his musical exploration in recent years.
Music from space
The second day of the Jazz Jamboree will be a tribute to two monumental faces of jazz. But first the Tomas Čila Quintet will play. American saxophonist Kebby Williams (partner of hip-hop artists – duo OutKast and Mos Defa) performs as a guest in the group of excellent Polish violinist.
The highlight of this year's festival will be the Pharoah Sanders Harvest Time Experiment concert. The name includes a unique project that was brought to life after the death of the great saxophonist Fora Sanders. The immediate impetus was a reissue of Sanders' seminal album Farah, which opens with the song “Harvest Time.” The band's musical director is bassist Joshua Abrams, and the person associated with the hero is guitarist Tisziji Munoz (he participated in the recording of the above-mentioned album in 1977). The arrangement will be completed by the musicians of the London trio Ill Considered.
The evening will end with the performance of the Sun Ra Orchestra. The history of this extraordinary group spans seven decades. Its founder believed himself to be an alien from space, born on Saturn (as indicated in the space poster of this year's edition of the event by Andrzej Pagowski). After Sun Ra's death in 1993, the group was led by Marshall Allen, a saxophonist who is now… a hundred years old. It is unlikely that the old musician will go this far, but even without him, every performance of the orchestra is a great musical spectacle (in the spirit of spiritual jazz), but also an aesthetic spectacle – the musicians perform in colorful clothes. suit and clothing.
Different faces of the guitar
Sunday's edition of the Jazz Jamboree will be a celebration of the guitar. It begins with the Raffaele Matta Trio. The Sardinian guitarist will present the latest material from his album Bandra West, a musical journey through his native Italy, the United States, India and the Far East.
Then, the quartet of Eivind Aarset, a guitarist who puts ambience above solo performances, takes the stage and combines jazz with new sounds (ambient, drum'n'bass, trance) and expands the boundaries of the genre. Aarseth in the Norwegian metal band Road, as a session musician, among others. with Ray Charles and Jan Garbarek and known for his collaborations with trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer.
In the finale of this year's edition of the festival, the band Tu-Ner, made up of musicians known from King Crimson: guitarist Trey Gunn and drummer Pat Mastelotto; also taps guitar master Markus Reiter. “They decided to join this very original trio, in which they combine elements of progressive rock, experimental rock, electronica and avant-garde in their own unique and original way”, – encourage the organizers.
All concerts will be held at Stodola club and start at 19.00.
