Bakari Sellers, who served as a Democrat in the South Carolina House of Representatives for eight years, said in an interview on CNN that Kamala Harris, who lost to Donald Trump, could be nominated to the Supreme Court.
For this scenario to happen, 70-year-old Justice Sonia Sotomayor would have to retire, allowing Joe Biden to nominate Harris in the final stages of his presidential term.
“It is unusual for a lawyer with no trial experience to be appointed to the Supreme Court, but it is not unprecedented,” Newsweek reports.
Kamala Harris has legal experience, but in a different field. Before becoming Vice President of the United States, he served as a senator and district attorney in San Francisco and as attorney general of California.
As the media has pointed out, this does not exclude the possibility of her taking up a new role. Previously, Barack Obama nominated Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court, even though she had not previously been a judge.
As Sellers noted, the new role would guarantee Kamala Harris a long-term seat on the liberal court.
US election results. Donald Trump cements victory
Donald Trump is solidifying his victory over Kamala Harris in this year's presidential election, according to data provided by The Associated Press.
Republicans received 295 electoral votes, more than the minimum number of electoral votes of at least 270. On election night, when Fox News first declared Trump the winner, Republicans addressed their supporters.
– Everything will be resolved. This is a historic result, we overcame obstacles, but no one expected us to succeed, he said. “The United States gave him an unprecedented victory,” Trump said. “We're going to take control of the Senate, and we're going to take control of the House of Representatives,” the president-elect announced.
