In front of the entrance to the Valencia regional government headquarters were muddy shoes, clothes and a red T-shirt with the words “Only people save people” written on it. These words by poet Antonio Machado during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) became a social slogan for victims of recent floods, expressing distrust in the effectiveness of state institutions.
While Mazon heads the opposition People's Party (PP), Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who leads the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), was also criticized. One of the banners carried by demonstrators read: “Sanchez and Mason are murderers.”
