President-elect Donald Trump spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, The Washington Post reported. This is the first meeting between the leaders since Trump won the presidency. The president is said to have advised the Russian leader not to escalate the conflict, and the conversation was about “peace in Europe.”
The Washington Post reported Sunday that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday.
Trump “advised the Russian president not to escalate the war in Ukraine and reminded him of Washington's significant military presence in Europe,” according to a person familiar with the conversation cited by the Washington Post.

The WP interlocutor added that the leaders discussed achieving peace in Europe, and that President Trump expressed interest in another meeting on ending the impending war in Ukraine.
On Wednesday, Republicans were scheduled to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky. President Trump assured the Ukrainian president of his support for Kiev.
The meeting took place after Donald Trump won the US presidential election. The politician will be sworn in at the Capitol in January 2025 to serve his second term as President of the United States.

The Ukraine issue came up multiple times during Republican speeches. President Trump has vowed to secure peace within 24 hours.
The call not to escalate hostilities could be combined with reports of an upcoming Russian counteroffensive in the Kursk Oblast. Moscow wants to regain lost territory.
