A 50-year-old Polish man drowned in the Atlantic Ocean near Pedro Gao beach in Portugal. The body was searched for more than an hour by several rescue workers and firefighters. Despite resuscitation attempts, the Pole could not be saved.
The tragedy occurred on Monday near Pedrogao Beach in the Leiria region of central-western Portugal. At around 4:40 p.m., a woman from Poland called for help from rescue workers. She explained that her husband went swimming 30 minutes ago and had not returned yet. The man was nowhere to be seen.

Pedro Servaenza Costa, the port commander of Figueira da Foz, said an alert had been raised and a rescue boat from the port and Vieira de Leiria's volunteer fire brigade were sent to the Atlantic Ocean.
The body was discovered around 6 p.m. in the Casal Ventoso neighborhood in the southernmost part of Praia do Pedrogan. After several attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead.

Commander Costa said resuscitation efforts by rescue teams on the shore were unsuccessful and the man was soon pronounced dead.
Twelve firefighters from the Leiria Volunteer Fire Department, the Marine Police and the Port of Figueira da Foz were active at the scene.
