Who is Jolanta Brzeska? She represented tenants in Warsaw
Jolanta Brzeska was an activist against the violent re-privatization in Warsaw. She and her family live in the capital at number 9 Nabielaka Street, which was handed over in 2006 to the pre-war owners and three heirs of the famous “debt dealer” Malek M.
The new owners repeatedly raised rents, and residents began to rack up debt. Tenants were also harassed and threatened. As a result of these events, Jolanta Brzeska and other residents founded the Warsaw Tenants Association. On March 1, 2011, the woman left her home for the last time. Her body was found a few days later in Pousin's Cultural Park. She was 64 years old at the time of her death.
The initial investigation into her case was called off in 2013 after failing to find the perpetrator. At the time, investigative authorities pointed to the involvement of a third party. The investigation was reopened in 2016 at the request of Prosecutor General Zbigniew Ziobro. The case was brought to the District Prosecutor's Office in Gdańsk.
Jolanta Brzeska became a symbol of the tenant movement. Every year, a ceremony commemorating her death is held in the capital, attended by the following people: Urban activists and politicians dealing with housing issues. In honor of the activist, a square in Warsaw's Mokotow district was named after her.
