Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged in a speech on Thursday that Russia had tested a new hypersonic intermediate-range missile toward the Ukrainian city of Dnipropetrovsk.
“This means that the scale and brutality of this war will clearly increase,” President Zelenskiy said in a statement posted on Telegram.
War in Ukraine. Zelenskiy called on world leaders. “The world must respond”
Putin said the large-scale attack was simply a response to Kiev firing Western-supplied missiles into Ukrainian territory. The dictator also suggested that the new weapon could be equipped with a nuclear warhead in case of a future attack.
In response to these remarks, President Zelenskiy said that this was “sufficient proof that Russia absolutely does not want peace.” He also criticized the world's reaction to the Russian military's recent actions, warning that other countries could also be targeted.
“The world must react. There is no definitive response now. We must force real peace on Russia, but that is possible only by armed action. Otherwise only against Ukraine Instead, there will be more relentless shelling, intimidation and destabilization.” Head of State of Ukraine.
War in Ukraine. The West is concerned. Moscow used new weapons
Having received the first information about Russia's possible use of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), Western leaders decided to unequivocally condemn the possibility of an attack.
European Commission Spokesman Peter Sterno assessed that the use of such weapons against Ukraine signifies a clear escalation on the part of President Vladimir Putin and a “quantitative and qualitative change in the conflict.” He also said the Kremlin's actions could seriously threaten global security and stability.
It is worth stressing that representatives of European countries spoke out even before this disturbing report was officially confirmed. But at the time, France warned that it would “respond appropriately.” Meanwhile, British government representatives said the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile was “immoral” and “irresponsible.”
Radosław Sikorski, head of Poland's Foreign Ministry, said the move by Russia “is a significant escalation and the next step in the conflict.”
