Scientists at a Portuguese institute have identified dengue fever as the most dangerous tropical infectious disease transmitted by this type of mosquito. The disease is characterized by, among other things, fever, rash, headache, joint and muscle pain, and in the most severe cases can be fatal.
According to IHMT experts, Aedes albopictus is currently most prevalent in the Lisbon metropolitan area and the Algarve region, which are the most popular areas for tourists on mainland Portugal.
Risk of dengue infection
“Cities such as Lisbon and Faro are at the highest risk of dengue infection due to the presence of these mosquitoes,” Portuguese television SIC wrote on its website.

Lisbon's São Domingos de Benfica city authorities have also issued a warning about the possibility of transmission of the mosquito-borne tropical disease, saying that city authorities have already confirmed the risk of infection in consultation with Portuguese medical institutions. It was clearly stated that there is.
In a statement, they called on residents of Portugal's capital to take precautions, such as removing water containers from open spaces and using repellents and mosquito nets.
