Seoul recorded its heaviest November snowfall since records began more than a century ago in 1907.
The South Korean capital was covered in at least 16 cm of snow on Wednesday, breaking the city's previous record of 12.4 cm dating back to November 1972.
This caused significant disruption across the country, with local media reporting that flights had been grounded, roads closed and transport services delayed.
At least one person is believed to have died in a weather-related road accident near Seoul.
Youn Ki-han, head of Seoul's meteorological division, told AFP news agency that the heavy snowfall was due to strong westerly winds and a “significant temperature difference between the surface of the sea and cold air.
This is expected to continue through Wednesday evening and into Thursday morning.
The cold weather comes after the region experienced a period of mild fall temperatures.
“Last week it felt like November fall was a bit warm, but in just a week it feels like it has turned into a winter wonderland, which is quite a contrast,” said businessman Bae Joo-han.
“So I went out into the street today to enjoy the first snowfall of this winter.”
