An explosion at an Italian oil refinery leaves two people dead, nine injured and four missing. The fire has already been extinguished, but firefighters are asking local residents to stay at home due to air pollution.
The explosion occurred at Eni's refinery in Calenzano, on the northern outskirts of Tuscany. Firefighters said the explosion occurred near the tanker's loading ramp, and the fuel container remained intact.
The explosion was so powerful that people living several kilometers away could hear it. A window in a building adjacent to the fuel depot was cracked.

A fire broke out after the explosion, but it was quickly extinguished. But the danger did not end, as toxic smoke filled the air. Local residents were urged to stay at home and wear masks if necessary.

The Italian company, which is partly state-owned, issued a statement on the matter. It was reported that “the cause and impact of the disaster are under investigation.” Experts will also assess what impact the explosion had on the environment and whether there was any contamination of surrounding waters.
As a result of the explosion, two people were killed, nine people were injured and four people are missing. Two of the injured are in critical condition. The region's governor, Eugenio Giani, said nearby hospitals were ready to receive injured people and people with symptoms of smoke inhalation.

“All of Tuscany is united in grief over the tragedy that occurred in Calenzano today,” Eugenio Gianni wrote on social media, adding that psychological help would be available for those who need it.
Due to the explosion, rail traffic was suspended and alternative transport was organized for passengers. Parts of a nearby expressway were also closed.
