The Franklin Fire broke out on Monday in Malibu, California, near Los Angeles on the West Coast of the United States. The fire spread over an area of 900 hectares on Tuesday. The fire gutted the building and forced the evacuation of 6,000 people.
Firefighters reported they had evacuated the area, which had more than 2,000 buildings. Firefighters warned that another 12,500 people could be evacuated.
A fire threatened the university. “Shelter Protocol” activated
The fire spread rapidly due to strong winds of up to 70km/h. At least 1,000 firefighters made short work of the blaze as gusty winds fanned the flames and the winds eased Tuesday morning.
Conditions are expected to favor the spread of the fire in the Malibu area until Wednesday.
Flames were visible from Pepperdine University, and the university temporarily suspended classes due to the threat. University officials also reported power outages on campus and a so-called “shelter-in-place protocol,” which was later discontinued.
“We are certain that some homes will be severely damaged,” said Matt Meyerhoff, a spokesperson for the city of Malibu. Estimated material losses have not yet been determined.
According to media reports, some roads are closed, including sections of the Pacific Coast Highway.
