Chancellor Olaf Scholz submitted a motion of confidence in his government on Wednesday. The Bundestag will decide on Monday whether to back the German chancellor's cabinet, but the outcome may be a foregone conclusion. Early elections are scheduled for February 23, 2025.
“The coalition of SPD, FDP and the Greens led by Scholz collapsed in early November. It is considered certain that the Bundestag will not give him a vote of confidence,” writes the DPA agency.
The Prime Minister of Germany planned to submit a vote of confidence to this country in the middle of January next year, but he changed his decision under the pressure of the opposition and coalition partners of the government.
According to the Basic Law, the vote on the proposal of the chancellor can be held no later than 48 hours after its adoption. According to the Bundestag administration, the debate and vote on the vote of confidence in the Scholz government will be held on December 16 at 1:00 p.m. If the chancellor does not get an absolute majority of 367 votes, he will not receive a vote of confidence. parliament

The scenario after the fall of the government
After losing the vote, Scholz could propose to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier that the Bundestag be dissolved. The head of state has 21 days to make a decision. After the collapse of the coalition government, Steinmeier announced his readiness to dissolve the parliament. New elections must be held within 60 days of the president's decision to shorten the term of office of the Bundestag.
The President announces the date of the vote.
Although the vote of confidence in Chancellor Scholz's government will be held next week, the election campaign has already started in Germany. Four parties nominated their candidates for chancellor: the Christian Democrats (Friedrich Merz), the SPD (Olaf Scholz), the AfD (Alice Weidel) and the Greens (Robert Habeck).
