Polish women take advantage of the new opportunity to have prenatal tests. Since the beginning of the year, their number has increased by 25% compared to last year. Since June, prenatal tests are free for every pregnant woman. Previously, only elderly women, post-pregnancy women with disabilities or suspected disabilities had such a right. There are currently no signs to test.
The number of pregnant women who underwent prenatal diagnosis increased by 25 percent compared to last year.
– The 25 percent increase recorded by the ministry is a great achievement, – emphasizes prof. Ewa Wender-Ojegowska, national consultant in obstetrics and gynecology. – We observe an increase in the number of patients month by month, – adds Monika Gablankowska, a midwife at the Uiastek Medical Center in Krakow.
Since June, prenatal tests are free for every pregnant woman. – Every pregnant woman has the right to have health security for herself and her child, to have peace of mind, – emphasizes Izabela Leshchyna, Minister of Health, representative of the Civil Alliance.

Previously, only elderly women, post-pregnancy women, with disabilities or suspected disabilities were eligible for free screening. There are currently no signs to test. – The only indication for prenatal diagnosis is to be pregnant, – emphasizes prof. Miroslav Wilgos from the State Medical Institute of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration of Warsaw, national consultant on perinatology. You should also request a doctor's referral for first and second trimester ultrasounds.

“It's the standard of modern medicine.”
– This is a great progress in prenatal diagnosis, which should be available to all patients in the 21st century – says prof. Eva Wender-Ojegowska.
Some fetal defects can be repaired in the mother's womb. Others – after proper management of pregnancy and preparation for childbirth – immediately after. “The pediatrician who attends the birth knows who he is dealing with,” assures Dr. Slawomir Pivovarczyk, gynecologist at the Uiastek medical center in Krakow.

Now there are more such knowledges. – We can discover more things that we have not discovered before, especially in this young population, – says prof. Eva Wender-Ojegowska. – In most cases prenatal tests show that everything is fine. In our country, in more than 95% of cases, such a situation is observed, – says prof. Miroslav Vilgosh.
Expenditure on prenatal diagnosis this year was about PLN 110 million. – The costs of these tests have increased by 30 percent, which is always a burden for the National Health Fund, but there are costs that cannot be saved – argues Izabela Leshchina.
