General Oleksandr Shirskiy said in an interview with Le Monde that a Ukrainian military offensive in the Kursk region was inevitable. Otherwise, the occupation forces could have invaded Sumy and Kharkov oblasts.
– I had no choice but to undergo this surgery. Silski explained that it was necessary to simultaneously halt the offensive in Kharkov, reduce the pressure on all fronts and prevent the opening of a new front in Sumy.
War in Ukraine. General Silski on the offensive near Kursk
– That is why I decided to attack the enemy's weak points with a very small number of soldiers in order to protect our borders – General Schilski further explained.
The military assessed that these actions weakened the offensive power of Russian forces “with the exception of Pokrovsk and Krahov” and reduced the intensity of the offensive.
In August 2024, Ukrainian forces entered Kursk Oblast, occupying the first Russian region in a war that has been going on for almost three years. Ukrainian forces controlled an area of 12 x 40 kilometers, including 28 Russian towns.
War in Ukraine. Attacks near Kursk are weakening
According to a report in the British weekly magazine The Economist, Ukraine has already lost half of its territory occupied by Russia. All units of the Ukrainian army in the Kursk region are currently on the defensive.
The withdrawal began in late September. Ukraine replaced its elite forces with inexperienced forces.
In November, President Vladimir Putin set a goal for the Russian military to expel Ukrainians from Kursk Oblast by January 20, when President-elect Donald Trump takes power in the United States.
