The Ministry of National Education wants students to have more time to complete tasks on their eighth-grade exams. He proposed increasing the time by 25 percent. As stated in the draft regulations, this change is aimed at countering the practice of applying for medical certificates based on the extension of the period of the 8th grade exam, as reported by the Central Examinations Commission to the National Ministry of Education. , District Examination Board or Podlasie Doctors Employers Association.
Long 8th grade exam. Myopia, flat feet, allergies
Joanna Zabielska Cechuch, a specialist in family medicine and chairman of the Podolski Doctor Employer Porosmienie Zielonogorski, told Interlia that doctors have been monitoring the problem for several years.
– Primary health care clinics are experiencing Armageddon after the first interview in September. Parents of not only eighth-graders but also high school graduates come to us and request a medical certificate, based on which we extend the exam time by 30 minutes. They may even have a photo saved on their mobile phone of the classroom blackboard where the teacher is writing the text that will appear on the certificate. Doctors say you will also receive a printed strip with this information on it.
There are also fights at the clinic. What do you mean by parent? – The regulations contain a table with information on who can extend this period, and there is a section on “chronic diseases”. The main people who come here are mothers who claim that they have myopia, flat feet, or allergic rhinitis, but I'm being mean to them because I don't want to write that on my medical certificate. We should be wasting our time and instead of treating, we should talk to people who are doing everything in their power to help their child become “better” and pass the exam at any cost.
Even if the family doctor does not issue such a certificate, parents will find a way in any case. “They go to a private office and pay 250-300 zlotys to obtain such documents,” Zabielska-Cieciuch points out.
“This is a pathology.” 16 percent of students in this region have such a certificate
Joanna Zabielska-Czeczów also emphasized that “this is a pathology” that primarily concerns Bialystok. – In the field, our colleagues (according to the Zielona Góra agreement – editor's note) did not report this issue to us. Here in Podlasie we are committing genocide, he added.
– I checked last year's statistics. The average in Poland is about 2%. In Podlaskie, where children take extended exams in the province, it is 16 percent. – Notify your doctor.
He added: – We intervened with the Ministry of Education, seeing that there was no chance of anything happening locally. It's a very stressful situation. Additionally, although I am an advocate of professional responsibility, I would like to see the medical certificates of these children, as in many cases the doctor's certificates can turn out to be false.
Certificate for extending the exam period. “Honest people are discriminated against”
Doctors also say that in some places honest people are not allowed to sleep in peace. – Situations like this happen. In mid-June, I visited the mother of a 7th grade girl. The mother said that only two children in the class had yet to “sort out their certificates.” And children with honest parents who don't value themselves are discriminated against, he says.
Another example?: – A doctor friend of mine tearfully admitted that he wrote such a certificate for his child because the principal before the high school exit exam suggested that those who didn't have one were worse off. I did. He also added that everyone has been asked to submit such certificates.
– Honesty is discriminated against, dishonesty is encouraged and rewarded – says Joanna Zabielska-Czeczów.
He also confirmed that another series of interviews took place at the school in December. – And there were also parents who claimed that this was the last call to submit such a certificate – he summarizes.
Will changing the regulations solve the problem?
There is a draft regulation but it pertains only to the Class 8 exam. – The problem with high school graduates still remains – points out Joanna Zabielska-Checzów. When asked if the new regulations would solve the problem for elementary school students, she replied: – I think so. It seems unfounded to apply for such a certificate, since everyone will have this period extended.
Robert Górniak, founder of the Dealerzy Wiedzy website and a teacher in Sosnowiec, thinks otherwise. One of the last entries reads: “The argument to reduce the number of extensions is a really interesting one. Does anyone know that these extensions are being arranged not because the student needs them, but because parents believe someone else can do it? But let's be clear: it's a 'deal' (in the sense of a legal medical recommendation) so their child should get it for a long time and that's it.”
The teacher added: “Extending the basic exam time does not change anything when it comes to considering further extensions. As long as there is a procedure to allocate additional time to students who need it, parents of students who don't need it as well. It is,” he added. In fact, rely on these steps. Now even more matters. Because I understand that the Polish version will be 150 minutes instead of 120, so the extension will be 75 minutes instead of 60.
