The investment damaged nature and made no sense, because after a few years erosion means that the camera poles installed today will be submerged – this is how conservationists explain the cutting of trees. This applies to the Lublin part of the border with Belarus, where an electronic fence was built near the Bug river, and trees and bushes were cut 10 meters from the shore. At the end of December, the regional department of environmental protection sent a letter expressing concern about the scale of tree cutting. Now the work begins to determine how the loss in nature will be compensated.
When we wrote about this case on December 10, Malgorzata Clemens, a nature photographer associated with the initiative “No for the wall”, explained that there are not even words to describe it. – This is a completely senseless and senseless destruction, – she said.
They create an electronic barrier
This concerned the valley of the Bug River, where cutting of trees and bushes was carried out in the Lublin Voivodeship, on the border with Belarus. All as part of the construction of the electronic barrier, a system that the Border Force says includes about 1,800 camera poles, about 4,500 day and night cameras, and special sensors.
The project is expected to be completed in April next year, and the value of the contract is over PLN 279 million.

Thanks to this barrier, border guards will be able to monitor the border road 24 hours a day and prevent illegal immigration. A barrier is being built in the Lublin Voivodeship along the entire length of the Belarusian border, that is, 172 kilometers, trees and bushes have been cut down in an area of 10 meters from the river bank.
As Captain Dariusz Sienitskyi, the spokesman of the Nadbujansky border guard unit, informed us according to this article. Article 10 of the Law of the Republic of Tajikistan “On the Protection of the State Border” in the lands located within the borders of the border road, border troops can build devices for the protection of the state border without the need for any act of implementation of the law in the form of administrative decisions. or contracts.
Cutting was also carried out in the Malgorzata Clemens nature reserve
The border forces report that there has been an environmental inspection
This means that the investment does not require any agreement with the Regional Department of Environmental Protection. However, the captain stressed. Sienicki – although it was by no means mandatory for the investor, it was covered by the environmental control of the contractor who cooperated with RDOŚ.
– Scope of cooperation, including: inspection of the work area and taking measures related to the protection of nature and environment. This is important because of the scale of intervention in the natural environment and the place of work, as well as the need and type of measures taken to minimize the impact of investment on the environment, including in areas covered by legal form. nature protection, – Captain Sienitsky emphasized.
The press department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration, to which we sent questions, also wrote about this.
Conservationists: the scale of deforestation is alarming
Such facts did not convince the tourist guide and nature lover Lukasz Sinowecki, who saw the extent of the destruction, for example, in the Szwaikaria Podlaska reserve in the Terespol commune and the Leg Debowy reserve near Janow Podlaski.
– No one questions the need to protect the border, but the way it is done is appalling. They even cut down the oldest giant oaks, dug up the ground, and destroyed the slopes, he told us.
Malgorzata Clemens “cleaned” the area 10 meters from the beach
Dr. Hub did not see the need to cut the entire waist. Michal Zmihorski, director of the Institute of Biology of Mammals of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Białowieża.
– I have the impression that this decision was not well thought out. It has caused great damage to nature, he noted.
RDO made recommendations
César Vierchon, spokesman for the Lublin Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection, informed us that after the request of the Border Guard to present its position, the management issued environmental recommendations in July.
– Among other things, they noted that environmental control over the work was established, and the work was carried out outside the poultry breeding season. And if the work is done in the reserves, the cut timber will remain in the reserves, he said.
Malgorzata Clemens developed the field
Management expressed concern
Now he informed us that the RDO sent a letter to the border troops on November 29, in which he expressed concern “about the size and method of carrying out excavation work and the number of cut trees.”
This happened after the employees of the RDO together with the Chotilov Forest District traveled to the nature reserve of Szwaikaria Podlaska, which was mentioned above. The speaker informs us that now the work of determining the conditions and amount of compensation for nature (including planting new trees – editor's note) will begin.
The press office of the Ministry of Climate and Environment, to which we sent questions, also tells us that the work on compensation is ongoing.

Border Guard: we gave a comprehensive explanation to GDOŚ in July
Lieutenant-Colonel Andrzej Juzwiak, the spokesman of the Border Guard Commander-in-Chief, informs us that the observations from the RDOŚ letter dated November 29 were delivered to the contractor, while the Border Guard already in July sent the Ministry and the General Directorate of Environmental Protection detailed explanations on how to invest should be implemented.
“Therefore, all information about the investment has been made available to the relevant agencies, which will carry out actions, including, if necessary, comprehensively explained compensation, if necessary.”
