Attack on Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany. German media reported that the driver of the car hit a group of people. Bild newspaper reported that there were injuries and “possible deaths” in the attack.
The mdr.de website reported that at least one person was killed and several others injured. Bild newspaper, citing emergency services, reported that between 60 and 80 people were injured.
Matthias Schuppe, a spokesman for the state government of Saxony-Anhalt, said it was a “terrorist attack”. “This is a terrible event, especially in the run-up to Christmas,” said Saxony-Anhalt Prime Minister Rainer Haseloff, who was on his way to Magdeburg.
A video purporting to show the attack is circulating on social media. It depicts a black car, probably a BMW, rushing into the crowd at high speed.
The driver of the car has already been arrested. Emergency services and the fire brigade are at the scene.
The Christmas market is closed. Organizers urged people to stay away from the city centre.
Bild newspaper reported that police were searching for explosives around the Christmas market.
Authorities in the nearby city of Halle responded to reports of an attack in Magdeburg by tightening security at the Christmas market.
