On Wednesday, an Embraer 190 passenger plane crashed in Kazakhstan. The local Ordaportal, citing authorities, reported that the most likely cause of the disaster was a collision with a flock of birds. As a result, the control system failed.
The Azerbaijan Airlines flight was scheduled to fly from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to Grozny, Russia. However, Orda's website stated that due to heavy fog over Grozny, the plane was diverted to another airport in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, Russia.

While changing its flight trajectory, it collided with a flock of birds and its control system malfunctioned.

According to Reuters, there were 62 passengers and five crew members on board at the time of the accident. Citing Kazakh authorities, the agency reported that 32 people had been rescued. However, as of 4pm local time (edited at 12pm Polish time), several survivors were undergoing surgery.

On board the ship were citizens from four countries: Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan. Authorities in the latter country announced Thursday, December 26, as a national day of mourning. Azerbaijan Airlines has suspended all flights to Russia's Grozny until the investigation into Wednesday's crash is completed.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences and called Azerbaijan's president directly. Iham Aliyev was on the summit in St. Petersburg, but left after learning about the tragedy.
“We deeply sympathize with those who lost loved ones and friends in this plane crash and wish a speedy recovery for all those who managed to survive,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at the time.
