In a symbolic act, Pope Francis opened the holy doors of Rome's Rebibia prison. Therefore, he wanted to show intimacy to the prisoners at Christmas and convey to them the teachings of the Church. This is the first such event in history.
On the second day of Christmas, Pope Francis opened the holy doors of Rome's Rebibbia prison in a symbolic gesture of closeness to prisoners in the Jubilee Year dedicated to hope, which began on Christmas Eve. This is the first time in history.

The Pope crossed the threshold of the prison door on his own, not in a wheelchair as he did in St. Peter's Basilica.
“I had hoped that a second sacred door would be here in the prison. Each of us, whether inside or outside here, would open the door of our hearts wide and hope turn into disappointment. I wanted to give them a chance to understand that it doesn't end,” Francisco said. I said this before making this gesture.
Mass was then celebrated in the prison chapel, attended by about 300 prisoners and guards. In his sermon he said: “Never lose hope. This is my message to you and all of us.”

“When the heart is closed, it becomes hard as stone and forgets kindness even in the most difficult situations. Each of us experiences such situations,” the Pope added.
Italy's Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio also attended the Mass at Rebibbia Prison.
