This year, about 101 kidneys were transplanted at the University Hospital in Krakow. This is much more than in previous years. A record was also achieved in the whole country. There is still no complete data for December, but it is already known that doctors transplanted more kidneys last year than in 2023.
Both doctors and patients celebrate a holiday at the Krakow University Hospital. This year, 101 kidneys were transplanted there. This is much more than in previous years.
– We are talking about 101 transplants, this is a number of transplants compared to the best western centers, this is the actual number of transplants, given the situation, how many cases are there when these transplants do not take place – points out Marcin Jedrichowski, director of the hospital University of Krakow.

Among the lucky people who received a new kidney in Krakow this year is Mrs. Katarzyn Doroszuk. – On December 19 of this year, I will celebrate my second birthday, because then I received a transplant, that is, a new life, without dialysis, without restrictions, – says the patient.

And dialysis is a huge limitation in life, as Mr Mackay, among others who is currently awaiting a kidney transplant, knows. This year, most of the kidneys were transplanted by centers in Katowice, Poznań, Gdańsk and Warsaw, except for Krakow. More than 200 kidneys have been transplanted only in two clinical hospitals of the capital. This is twice as much as Krakow. In both cases, these are very good results.
– The result of more than a hundred transplants this year shows that we are among the most important transplant centers in Poland, – emphasizes the professor. Piotr Richter from the University Hospital in Krakow.
A transplant is a chance for a new life for many people. Therefore, the declaration of will is very important
A record for the whole country
A record was also achieved in the whole country. There is still no complete data for December, but it is already known that doctors transplanted more kidneys last year than in 2023. These are primarily kidney transplants from deceased donors – there are still a few kidney transplants from living and related donors.
– In our center, about 1-2 percent, in general, about 50 out of 1250 people in Poland are performed during the year. These are percentages, says Bogdan Niekowal from the University Hospital in Krakow.

Transplants from deceased donors are increasing because eligibility criteria for transplants have improved. Most organs go to patients only.
Katarzyna Doroshuk, who has already been transplanted, can now plan a trip that was previously impossible due to the need for dialysis. – I am extremely happy, I can’t wait, but I feel very good here, I already said yesterday during the trip that I will relax here. All of them are pleasant and comforting, like a vacation in a five-star hotel, says Mrs. Katarzyna.
